It's Been Way Too Long...

Don't Call It A Comeback!

Seriously, I've been here for years. Feels weird to look at my little personal blog and realize it's just a few months shy of a year since I've done anything new here. Of course for six months while on deployment, I had no access to computers or the internet. But that was then and this is now.

Through it all, I remain unbroken.
Not only am I back. I've been back. And for now, I'm not going anywhere! When I make a statement like that, I secretly wish that living up to it were entirely within my control, but the realist in me knows better.

Now more than ever, this little used, seldom viewed blog will be a fairly important outlet for me. The fact that few people come here is a plus. Now a public figure, there are so many places to readily find my work or references to me. With that comes a certain level of expectation. When I write a piece for publication, there are all kinds of rules related to it. Here, I don't have that. I'm just free to be me.

In a way, as a writer, this little place represents true freedom for me. It is what it is. You don't have to like it, heck, you don't even have to read it, but it's here and will serve its purpose.

Some pieces my be in depth and thought provoking. Others will be short and silly. With all that I've been through recently, the fact that I can be suddenly -- and without warning -- taken off this Earth is more real than ever. I'd rather tell as much of my own story as possible than to have other people do it.

Non writers may have difficulty understanding the innate, unquenchable urge we writers have to continuously do what we do.

Going forward, on occasion I may direct the public to this blog when I write a story, or jump on an issue that doesn't readily fit the format of any of my other outlets.

My life has been interesting to say the least. The last year or two have been one hell of a ride. Looking back and learning lessons, I look forward to forging into the future. Are you ready? Let's go!

Working Out, How Long Is Too Long?

Today I said to a young lady; "have a good workout." Her response utterly floored me.

"I'm gonna try, today I only have a limited amount of time. Just two hours..."

She was serious. So I innocently suggested to her to make the most of it. This is when she really threw me. "Normally I like to hit the cardio for a few hours then hit weights." She said this with a straight face full of sincereity. To be honest, I was completely caught off guard. Didn't even know what to say to that one.

First off, who on Earth has that kinda time to work out like that? And if you had the time, why would you spend so much of it working out? I should add, this young lady appeared to be in excellent shape, quite lean and toned, but my goodness, I'm sure results can be achieved without going hard like that.

Granted, the average person absolutely doesn't exercise enough. We're a nation of unfit people. Most of us are too fat. Others may not be fat but have virtually no endurance or stamina. Then on a whole the average American is a stone cold weakling.

We've completely lost our way on this. But I'm curious, if you had total control over your schedule, what would be your ideal workout schedule? How many days per week, how long per session?

The Vulture

One night while sleeping, a strange creature came creeping, into my chamber door. His appearance was frightful, and oh so dreadful, just being there, he brought much fear.

As I gasped and asked, in the dark of the night, who goes there, who goes there, a voice answered back and said; have no fear, there's a reason I'm here. I come with a message for him who will listen, so lend me your ear and you will hear.

I prefer to travel by air, I fly through the sky, where ever I go, you can be sure, death and decay lay somewhere below. Sometimes I take flight, in the silent of night, for my work is never really through. When I am near, it is certain and sure, the end for some has come.

For me to live, others must die. Do not ask me why. It is simply the order of things down here.

These words caused me to shiver, I began to quake and quiver.

Do not be afraid he said, for now is not your time. I speak to you because the truth you seek. The mysteries of life and death, the strong and the weak, it is these that I am charged to keep. I listened to these words as he moved his beak.

Looking at this strange visitor, I thought for sure I was dreaming. I felt like screaming, for here I was, in the middle of the night, and in my room, bathed in the full moon light, was a bird who came with a word.

What is your name I asked: Soar he said. Not to be confused with my cousin Evermore. At this point I had had enough, I tried to show him the door, but he begged let him be, to tarry on a little longer, allow him to stay, for there was more to say, and for me to ponder.

Very well I said, as I returned to my bed, listening to the talking bird, who was bringing the word. After much was said, my eyes grew heavy. Drifting off to sleep, I could hear, Soar was still talking.

In the morn I arose, thinking back of the encounter, I nearly froze, what a strange dream it seemed I'd had. Assuring myself, it was all in my head, the sun rising up signaled time to get out of bed.

Getting on my feet, taking to the street, I walked into town seeking something to eat. On the way, I saw a small crowd gathered. I could hear them say; look at him, what an ugly sight! So decidedely frightful, in the bright morning light.

Peering closer, I could not believe. On the ground was a carcass, picked and ripped raw. It was hard to tell, what it was we saw. Man or beast, we couldn't say in the least. I inched a bit nearer, so that I may see clearer, who or what was responsible for all this. Much to my fright, was an unbelievable sight, for the the same feathered fiend, he was having a feast.

With a clap of my hands, and a loud yell, I said: go on Soar, get out of here! He immediately took flight, climbing higher and higher he was soon out of sight. Though he flew away, there was something I knew, the messenger would be back, for his work was not through.

Seagull Sushi -- In Nature, Death Sustains Life

For some to live, others must die...

We live in is a cold cruel world, truly at times only the strong survive.

After jogging at Druid Hill Park yesterday, on the way out I came across this scene just yards from the road. A shock to my senses.  As a one time rural inhabitant, now converted city dweller, I'm no longer used to coming face to face with the harsh realities that make up the circle of life in nature.

Amid the pile of white fluffy down feathers, there was remnants of a bloody carcass being quickly consumed by the hawk.  Residing at the top of the food chain, and being a highly developed predator, I imagine the seagull was taken out with the quickness and precision of a contract hit.  The innocent, but unintelligent seagull was probably bobbing around on the ground, without a clue, as sudden death came from above. The whole thing, from attack to death probably took place in seconds.

Many Seagulls Never See The Sea

Seagulls were once denizens of large bodies of water, now they're typically found in landfills and suburban strip mall parking lots.  Clearly in it's evolution, these proud walking, loud yapping, eat anything scavengers are ill equipped to defend themselves against predators.  In my estimation, they're probably poor at sensing imminent danger too.  Such is the lot of  many wild animals choosing to live and subsist via co-existence with humans, depending on our refuse and waste for food.

It occurred to me, that one of the primary differentiation between humanity and all that dwell in the animal kingdom, is our highly developed sense of reason and intelligence.  You see, in the animal kingdom, killing is often necessary in order to eat the next meal.  For the most part, animals have not learned to employ sustainable agriculture and other food production methods, but we humans have, yet we still kill.

Humans The Main Murderers Among Earth Creatures

The question remains, why then do we kill the way we d?.  Not just killing animals, but each other too.  In nature, most highly intelligent species rarely ever kill their own.  Sure there's skirmishes and occasional sparring to establish dominance and pecking order, but homicidal tendencies is something you just don't see among beasts.

In modern urban cities like Baltimore, where the killing takes place at such a high rate, and on such a regular basis, one wonders whether man has truly evolved, or in some instances, could possibly be on steady slide of devolvement, or at the very least, arrested development.

Human beings have certainly learned, on an intellectual level at least, how to peacefully live and co-exist without killing each other, putting it into practice is another matter.  Has there not been enough killing in our history for us to have all learned in the end it leads us no where?  While animals act out of instinct and habit, mankind is supposed to be inspired by intellect and intelligence.

Instead what we see on a daily basis is human beings representing more of a predator to each other than any else.

A New Challenge Perhaps?

What little boy didn't have play sword fights, either with his friends or imaginary foes? For me Zoro was the one to emulate. For most of us, our fascination with the ancient art of sword play dies off once we depart early childhood.

Few schools offer fencing programs, perhaps with some misguided reasoning that it could encourage violence. Of course these same school probably all have football.,

With my fitness and physical training goals for this year already mapped out, fitting in fencing might not be feasible, but you better believe now that I know we have some first rate clubs in the area, I'm pretty excited about the possibilities.

On guard!

Running Down A Dream...

At 3:00 A.M. save for a few early risers, most normal people are fast asleep in bed. During these ultra early morning hours, most normal people are are not up writing blogs about the fantastic workout they just completed that started round midnight. But I'm not normal, the things I want to achieve in life aren't normal.

Right now, the feelings eminating from the very core of my soul are not easily described. Endorphine high? No doubt! But there's more to it than that.

After getting a new gym membership back in November, the first time in years, I've been easing into a gradually increasing routine. Well tonight (or this morning), there's no doubt in my mind, I'M BACK!!!

MIDNIGHT MADNESS

First a warm up road run, then a nice indoor bike ride of nearly an hour. These were the perfect primer needed to attack the weights with fire and intensity.  Pushed my self to new boundaries tonight.

Some years ago, these intense training sessions were routine for me, I was in phenominal shape, looked and felt great, and was excited to take things to the next level. Some where along the journey, life got in the way.

After slacking off quite a bit, getting fat, lazy and outta shape, the inner beast in me had had enough. The time to unleash the giant within has come.

BACK ON THE PROWL

All my life I've been chasing something that I could never quite capture. At times I seemed to have gotten very close to it. I could see it, smell it, taste it, even imagine touching it, but never quite get my hands on it. For several decades, it's remained little more than a dream.

Like a carrot on a stick, the chase has kept me going, moving along steady on the road to be fit for life, and fit to live.

With the help, guidance and grace of God, although the road in front me now seems a bit further, steeper, and more rocky than was been before, my determination is also stronger than ever. I got this!

I Had A Dream -- Martin Luther King Revisited... LITERALLY...A Strange Trip

I had a dream last night.  No seriously, hear me out on this one.  It was me and Dr. King hanging out.  You might have remembered I wrote a letter to him yesterday.  After which, I sought to deepen my connection and understanding of this man a little further.  What ended up happening caught me completely off guard, but was a pleasant, if not slightly spooky surprise.

DREAM MACHINE/TIME MACHINE

Having a life long fascination with all matters brain related, and a particular emphasis on paranormal activity and behavior, I especially like to delve into studying dreams and altered states of consciousness.

After downloading over 24 hours of audio of Martin Luther King speeches and sermons yesterday (see end of story for links on this), including some rarely heard or publicized , I planned to fully immerse my self in all things King in honor of his birthday.

I've always admired and looked up to him as a great example of leadership, courage and integrity to be emulated, so why not learn more about him?  Not merely through the writings and recollections of others, but through his own words.

Being a student of history in general, studying the lives of great people who've lived before us is quite enjoyable.  As a researcher, when I get into a subject I like to dig deep.  I wanted to get to know Dr. King beyond popular soundbites, quotes and common perceptions.

ALTERING STATE OF MIND

Near the end of a long day, I thought of a little experiment.  What if I played the speeches and sermons of Dr. King while I slept?

Going with the theory that our subconscious is a massive recorder, able to grab hold of data at a much greater rate than we're consciously aware. I've long had the practice of listening to audio books with the device set to play at two times, or even three times normal speed.  There seems to be something about faster pace audio that helps deter drifting off, and possibly causing the subconscious to tune in closer.

My personal results have been greatly increased recollection and retention.  I'm able to pour through a great amount of material in a fraction of the time it would ordinarily take.  To deepen the impression and understanding, I sometimes listen to the same material at warp speed, several times in a row.  This sort of  feels like programming my own mind.  Not much different than the well known experiments on subliminal messages, discovered to be so powerful, their use on the unsuspecting is considered highly unethical.

BACK TO THE DREAM

Somewhere in the night, after a beautiful introduction by Coretta Scott King, I fell asleep to the words of the great orator.  Then came the dream ...

There I was hanging out with Dr. King.  I distinctly remember the whole scene being set in the kind of grainy black and white we see on television clips from that era.

I was fully involved in the scene.  Dr. King spoke to me, laughed and joked, and even posed for me to take photographs.  After a few serious poses, he started to smile broadly as he sat for my lens.

TIME TRAVELER

The strangest part of the whole thing is, within the dream, I was keenly aware of the future.  Though I was there with him, I was overwhelmed with sadness knowing how his life would end.  It was clear in the dream, that during our time together, Dr. King had no idea what was to come, but like a strange time traveler from the future, I knew his eventual fate.

Making matters worse, much as I wanted to share with him where things were going and what was to happen, I felt a heavy inner urging to stay silent on the matter, and not to interfere with fate or future, for it wasn't my place to do this.

At some point, the whole thing became too much, I woke up and in a sleeping daze, must have paused the audio and dozed back to sleep.  When I finally arose for the day, looking at the timer, over five hours of audio had played before it was stopped.

I do not intend to even try to conjure up some sort of deep meaning or conclusion to this dream.  Its presented to you in the interest of sharing.  Did I really travel back in time? Am I some sort of deranged delusional, neurosymptomatic patient needing to be institutionalized?  I leave that for you to decide.  None the less, I found the whole thing quite interesting, indeed I had a dream.

Happy Birthday Dr. King -- Thank You For All You Have Done

Dear Dr. King!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!!!

I realize it'll probably be a while till you see this, but I wanted to take a few moments to record some of my thoughts on how much you've meant to me, and how far we've come since you've been gone.

Although today's your birthday, most of America will not actually recognize or honor you until tomorrow.  Well, I'm not sure about the honoring part, but a lot of people will have a day off.  How many will truly recognize they have you to thank for this?  Who knows!

Real men wore hats, cool cats wore fedoras!
This may seem a bit odd, but really you're in good company.  They celebrate the birthdays of Jesus and Presidents Washington and  Lincoln on days other than the actual dates also, and they give them about the same recognition and honor.  A great time for picnics, parties, parades and car sales.

Speaking of your birthday, you don't even want me to begin to tell you about how much resistance there was to designating it a federal holiday.  It's peculiar how we celebrate with a holiday, Christopher Columbus who was neither American nor president.  Come to think of it, actually quite strange' for other than yourself, he's the only man who was never president, but has been honored with a national holiday.

Kind of ironic really.  In some ways, Christopher Columbus could be thought of as one of the founding fathers of American slavery of black people.  Where as, you're most definitely one of the founding fathers of our modern day freedom and liberation.

By the time you read this, I guess you'll already know, they killed Bobby Kennedy too.

Dr. King, a lot has happened in America since you last walked the Earth.  We've gained all sorts of freedoms, made all kinds of progress, even to the point of having a black president.

Remember that dream you had? Could you believe I went to school and sat next to white girls and white boys.  Got invited to their homes for dinner, and even went on dates with some of the white girls and lived to tell about it.
Even Martin Luther King found time for fun on occasion.
FREEDOMS FATE IN QUESTION

Looking back over the years, we really have come a long way, but today I've become worried.  More worried than I've ever been in my entire life.  While we've marched ahead and made great strides, I fear we may have started to slowly slip backwards and nobody's paying attention.

There's this thing called the Patriot Act.  Oh Dr. King, I can't even begin to describe how horrific it is once you dig into the details.  If it were around in your day, long before your great March On Washington, you probably would have been locked away and never seen or heard from again under the guise of "national security."

After all, to many in government and to the powers that be, you were considered a grave threat, but I guess you already know this.  There's been many more incremental threats and scaling back of our freedoms, but most of us seemed unconcerned or too busy living our lives to pay attention.

I hope some of us will wake up before it's too late.  So much of what you fought for, so much of what you believed in, so much of the very essence of the spirit of what you stood for is at risk today in America.

You probably have a ton of others letters to read, so I'll wrap this up now.  There's much more I'd like to share with you, but I suppose that will have to wait.  Perhaps if it's OK I'll write you again sometime.

Thanks for all that you have done, thank you for fighting for our freedoms, thank you for inspiring a generation, thank you for paying the ultimate sacrifice.

Tearfully yours, with love,

A.F. James MacArthur

Working With What You Have

A motivational moment with A.F. James MacArthur Ph.A.L.

The greatest journey begins with a single step.

Most of us at one point or another have had big dreams and grand goals of things we want to do, achievements we wish to attain, even places we desire to find be, but often times, before we begin, we talk ourselves out of it.

Under the guise of being "reasonable" or rational, we give ourselves all manner of excuse and explanation as to why what we want to do cannot be done.  Of course, thought patterns like this are self limiting and absolutely only guarantee one thing. If you think you can't, you're right!

Some of us want to be right so bad, that we constantly tell ourselves what we can't do, then subtly and unconsciously follow a path of self fulfilling prophecy, so in the end we can feel gratified we were right all along.

What's amazing is, for most of us, everything we need to get started on the most lofty, most ambitious, most grandiose goals, are already within our possession.  For to begin, does not require having all ingredients necessary for completion.

Example: I've driven back and forth across the country so many times I've lost track.  Not once at the start of my journey, did I have enough gas in my tank to make it all the way.  This fact never stopped me from getting started.

Now obviously, to get to my destination, I would have to refuel several times, but observe closely as I break this down on how that really works.  Before I can refuel, I need to make space in my gas tank.  The way to do this, is by using the gas that's already in there.

Driving down the road, in the direction of my ultimate destination, is the most effective and efficient way to use what I already have; a full tank of gas.  Note, it is impossible to add more fuel until I use at least some of what I already have.  See where I'm going with this?

In life it is often this way.  For those of faith, it is said God never gives you more than you can handle.  Most people think of this in terms of trials and tribulations, but I like to think it applies to talents and means too.  That is, to quote a song I love; "you only get what you give."

Driving down the road and using 10 gallons of gas means there's now room for me to add 10 more gallons. This contributes to my progress, because getting started with what I have already allowed me the potential to get to the point to where I needed more fuel.  No doubt, closer to my goal, then when I began.

It would be absurd of me to sit at the start of a long journey and fill my mind with doubt and trepidation because where I needed to go, took more gas than I had to get there.

Admitedly this story is a bit simplistic, but I've found in life, often things are far more simple than we make them out to be. Truly, much of it is on how we choose to look at things.

Whatever it is you think you really want to do, get started now! Don't tell yourself; I don't have enough money, not enough time, talent, education or what have you. Just begin! You already have more than you know, and by using what you got, or for the believers, showing yourself faithful with a little, allows room for you to have so much more.

My 10 gallon gas tank can take me from here to anywhere, 10 gallons at a time, or no where at all, if I sit and stall. It's all up to me. Just as your choices are up to you.

Remember, you do not need everything necessary for completion, in order to begin. What a simple concept.

Running Of The Bull!

For me, running has been a life long passion, but not one that I've been most faithful too.  I first started seriously running nearly 25 years ago.  Since then, among other things, I've ran track, trained for triathlons, competed in road races of various lengths, ran for miles and miles barefoot on the beach, through the woods you name it.  Along the way though, there's also been periods of time where I've done no running at all.

Whenever I start back up again, there's always a rush of energy surging through my body with each step I take. I'm immediately hit with a wave of emotions wondering why I ever stopped in the first place.  Sometimes I've had legitimate excuses, such as being in a few serious car accidents, a motorcycle accident that nearly killed me, even getting shot in my leg, not to mention a whole host of other lesser injuries.  Other times, looking back, I just can't figure out why.

Anyhow, with this afternoons beautiful 70 degree weather, and clear sunny skies, going for a run is something Midnight (the dog) and I just couldn't resist.  About a mile and a half from the Crows Nest (our house) to Lake Montebello (see photo below), another mile and a quarter or so circuiting the lake, then the return mile and half home.  It was blast.

Now I'm sitting here high on endorphins, while Midnight is sleeping soundly at my feet.  I write this blog in hopes of capturing some of the feeling so that if I ever feel like not running, all I have to do is read this, it'll bring back the memories, and we'll be motivated to head out the door and pound some pavement.

Why is this called 'Running Of The Bull?'  As much as I like to run, my form and gait these days leaves a lot to be desired.  At 260 pounds, I lack the grace of a gazelle so many of the stylishly attired runners going pass me possess.  And trust me, they're ALL running past me, I'm S-L-O-W.  When I go out, it's more like a pounding pachyderm, a bull elephant at that.  But hey, at least I'm moving right?

Well, it's time to go let the rabbits out into the yard.  Now those are fast little creatures.  Refresh my memory, why are we the superior species again?

No Accomplishment Without Adversity

Are you facing a difficult situation or dealing with severe setback in your life? Often when this happens to us, we ask God why. Why me?  I've learned to flip the coin and ask why NOT me? What makes me so special to think I ought to live a life free of adversity?

When we look closely at struggle and adversity, we learn that they never last forever. It has been said that 80% of the things we fear never happen to us.  So why live with fear and worry?

Among the greatest people to have ever walked the earth, all faced severe adversity and numerous setbacks throughout life.  Most did not became great or notable until AFTER going through many struggles.  In future writings I'll explore examples of people who have conquered adversity and gone on to greatness.

Count difficulty and suffering as blessings, knowing that you've been selected for great rewards, but there's just a test you have to pass first in order to recieve it.  When you think of it, be glad you were even selected to receive the great reward already reserved for you.  Remember, to whom much is given, much is required.  It's a little backwards to expect the reward first.  That's like going to a store and expecting to walk out with merchandise before paying the price.  Such a mindset guarantees continued pain and suffering.

Whenever you find yourself wondering, what's next, could it get any worse, that's when we have to step out of the present and look to the future.  After you're through the test, you'll have a superb TESTimony. Isn't that how it always works? Hang in there, stick to it, take a deep breath and keep on moving.  No matter what's happening, no matter where you are, no matter how long it takes, know that one day, someway, there are better things in store. I guarantee it.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Have you recently struggled though an ordeal and gotten to light at the end of the tunnel?  I'd love to hear about it.

If you're currently in the midst of adversity, I challenge you today to look through what ever hardship is in front of you, and remind yourself that victory comes to those who believe in it the most.  It's your choice, what will you believe?

Saturday Sentiments -- My Return To Real Blogging

One month is far too long to go without blogging. I suppose the harsh perfectionist inside keeps me away from writing and or posting if I do not feel the material is up to a certain standard. At first this may seem trivial, but the more I think about it, this attitude should really be abandoned. This is my blog after all. The only editor is myself.

Who cares if others choose to judge me by what is written here? It’s not as if the material is being put out there with some claim of literary excellence. In the true original spirit of blogging, these words are just a collection of my various thoughts, opinions and reflections, mostly unfiltered, from my mind to yours.

To the thousands of people who’ve read my work over the years (both here and elsewhere) I have to sincerely thank you. You provide validation that at least some of the times, I may actually have something worthwhile and interesting to say.

So to this end, I’m declaring my intention to return to my old school blogging roots. Going forward, this could get really interesting. The messages seen here will cover a wide range of topics. Some may be newsy, others could be deeply personal. If you’re strictly looking for deeply insightful, hard hitting news, this place may disappoint you.

As a writer, I must produce continually. Whether or not the words are worthy of formal publication or not, the engine inside continues to turn, and the exhale of expression cannot be denied.

Some of you may be reading my writing for the first time, and others have known me and my work for decades. You all know who you are, thank you for making this virtual connection. The positive energy so many have sent is being felt all the time.

For now, let me encourage you to pursue your dreams no matter how delusional others may claim you to be. As long as your desires fall within the laws of nature and God, GO FOR IT!

Be Yourself, Ignore Envy, Hatred & Negativity

Never allow yourself to be defined by the judgement of others. Their opinions and perceptions of you are just that; theirs; it doesn't have to be yours. You are who you are and what you are despite what others my think. If they can't see what you can be, it is because they have issues of their own. Embrace your potential, aggressively pursue your dreams, leave the haters behind, find who you are.

This Morning’s Message

By A.F. James MacArthur Ph.A.L.
Governments continue only if they are fair. –Proverbs 16:12 (NCV)
In a little while I will be headed back down to the courthouse for another round. Regular readers may have noticed my writing output has significantly decreased. For those close to me, this should come as no surprise. The tremendous weight and pressure that I’ve felt on my shoulders have been a great strain. They’ve tried everything possible to drag me under, surely they must wonder how I’m still standing. As much as my enemies wish to take me down, their efforts have not succeeded. Yes they’ve kicked me, yes they’ve knocked me down, but I continue to get up, and to their dismay, I am still around.
It is my hope to someday soon get back on track and return to a level of productivity that I could be pleased with. As a writer, I have suffered withdrawals from lack of output. The photographer and videographer in me yearns to capture the images all around. The inquisitive investigator that I am has so many questions I intend to ask. As tough as the situation is right now, I know that even this too will pass.
Early this morning while out for a walk. I couldn’t help but reflect on the trials I’ve been through recently, and the anticipated challenges just ahead. Looking forward, I am not afraid facing the future. Seeking strength as I do often from the Holy Scriptures, this morning I was led to passages that were particularly encouraging, and perhaps even prophetic.
I’ve been summoned yet again and my presence is desired to grace the halls of justice so I will not be around today. That means no updates, no new stories, no rants for a while. As I head back down to the court for yet another full day of questioning, interrogation and examination, I leave you with this;
People may make plans in their minds, but only the Lord can make them come true. You may believe you are doing right, but the Lord will judge your reasons.
